Clark Kerr Symposium

Other weekend events

The undergraduate colleges are at the heart of the UC Santa Cruz student experience. The colleges at UC Santa Cruz are designed to strengthen education by making natural the communication–between students and teachers, between students, and between fields of study–that is essential to the process and enjoyment of learning. This weekend of events is invested in celebrating and exploring this college ideal.

During the weekend we will be celebrating the two newest editions to the campus and college community, Colleges Nine and Ten; we will focus on the unique and vital structure of the college system within the large university; we will actively engage in the meaning and importance of the public research university; and we will celebrate the voice and vision of the student.

The Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Awards Program was established in 1993 by former UCSC Chancellor Karl S. Pister to increase opportunities for talented community college students to reach their dream of attending UCSC. The scholarships recognize students who have overcome adverse socioeconomic circumstances, who have a demonstrated commitment to assisting and improving the lives of others, and who might otherwise be unable to attend UCSC because of financial reasons. In the words of M.R.C. Greenwood herself: "This programs makes a tangible difference in the lives of students at neighboring community colleges" and "It puts a university education within the reach of students who would otherwise be unable to attend UCSC, and that's an accomplishment of which we are all very proud."
