Rethinking the Student Experience in the 21st Century Public Research University Friday, October 10, 2003 UC Santa Cruz On the weekend of 10-12, 2003, UC Santa Cruz will celebrate the inauguration of two new residential colleges - the first new colleges to be opened at UCSC in nearly 30 years. To mark this historic weekend, we invite our colleagues in higher education to join us in a major academic symposium on the critical role that public research institutions must play in preparing students to be future leaders in all fields and professions. The University of California's first annual Clark Kerr Symposium will honor Clark Kerr, president emeritus of the University of California and a scholar whose vision was instrumental in shaping UC Santa Cruz. The Symposium will bring together national and state leaders in education to speak on the role higher education plays in society in the 21st century. Speakers Richard C. The symposium will feature panel discussions focused on four themes related to higher education in public research universities: 1. Examining the benefits of a diverse student body 2. Creating innovative curricula responsive to a changing world 3. Developing informed and engaged citizens 4. Preparing students to make meaningful contributions to society
