Other weekend events The undergraduate colleges are at the heart of the UC Santa Cruz student experience. The colleges at UC Santa Cruz are designed to strengthen education by making natural the communicationbetween students and teachers, between students, and between fields of studythat is essential to the process and enjoyment of learning. This weekend of events is invested in celebrating and exploring this college ideal. During the weekend we will be celebrating the two newest editions to the campus and college community, Colleges Nine and Ten; we will focus on the unique and vital structure of the college system within the large university; we will actively engage in the meaning and importance of the public research university; and we will celebrate the voice and vision of the student. Theme-oriented residential colleges are not common in higher education. They are, in fact, quite rare in public research universities. Since its inception, UC Santa Cruz has sought to create diverse living and learning communities that cross-disciplinary boundaries to prepare students to tackle some of the world's critical issues. Our new colleges will continue this tradition of innovation. Join us for a panel presentation and dedication ceremonies for Colleges Nine and Ten involving dignitaries, students, faculty, and alumni. Date: Saturday, October 11th This inaugural event will raise funds for the many different scholarships available to students at UCSC. Proceeds from this benefit dinner will help support undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships, as well as undergraduate internships, community service, and research. Pister Leadership Opportunity Awards Program was established in 1993 by former UCSC Chancellor Karl S. Pister to increase opportunities for talented community college students to reach their dream of attending UCSC. The scholarships recognize students who have overcome adverse socioeconomic circumstances, who have a demonstrated commitment to assisting and improving the lives of others, and who might otherwise be unable to attend UCSC because of financial reasons. In the words of M.R.C. Greenwood herself: "This programs makes a tangible difference in the lives of students at neighboring community colleges" and "It puts a university education within the reach of students who would otherwise be unable to attend UCSC, and that's an accomplishment of which we are all very proud."
